Sugar

People consume an estimated 130 lbs of sugar per person per year. The higher rates of childhood diabetes, high blood pressure, and dental decay are correlated to sugar intake. Sugar is the fuel for the bacteria in our mouths and sticks to our teeth. As the bacteria in the plaque on our teeth grow, it destroys our enamel by releasing acids. Avoid drinking sodas and juices and/or chewing foods laden with sugar. Drink 6-8 glasses of water daily. Limit your exposure of your teeth to sugar if you choose to continue to consume soft drinks to meal times only. For ex, frequently sipping a Mountain Dew drink throughout the day causes more damage to your teeth because you are allowing the teeth to be attacked by a pool of bacteria and acid for many more hours than if you just limit it to meal times. High sugar consumption can lead to tooth erosion and cavities. Prevent damage from sugar by brushing and flossing 2X day for 2 min. Use an antibacterial mouth rinse 2X/day. See your dentist at least 2X /year.
